These guys are great. Reasonably priced, professional, reliable and attentive. The tech they just sent for a service, Brandon, was great. He took the time to teach me about the HVAC equipment I had installed some time ago, patiently answered my questions and even took the time to wipe down the front of my furnace just because.
Judith R.
We used Elite HVAC service to install a whole-house humidifier. The outstanding team of Chris, Joseph and Jorban were wonderful to work with. They are knowledgeable, responsive, polite, and we could not have asked for better service. It was evident that they love what they do! There was a minor glitch getting an electrical part, but Juan kept us updated, and it didn’t take long to resolve the issue. We highly recommend Elite and will definitely use them again!
Michael B.
Our tech Michael was great. Arrived earlier than the window we were told. He was knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. Probably the best tech for a service company that we have ever hired. If you use Elite, I recommend trying to request him for your service.

Every interaction with Elite was excellent. Barb provided friendly and personalized help with scheduling, Steve brought his experience with old furnaces and took the time to show and explain why our very old unit was beyond saving, and Joseph and Yorvin spent several hours expertly and cleanly installing a new furnace. We called in the morning to request a diagnostic visit, and had our new furnace up and running by the end of the next day. From now on, Elite is our go-to company for HVAC service.

Our boiler failed a few years back on Christmas Eve. Elite came out and somehow obtained a Lockinvar boiler (98% efficiency) that we wanted. Since then, Elite has been replacing the filter (not a simple air filter, but a filter that drains 40 feet away). Whenever they come out, they always have arrived a bit early... a good thing. Also, and maybe I'm crazy, but I think there prices are fairly low. They always clean up afterwards too. I highly recommend Elite HVAC for any such needs you may have.

Signs You Need Heat Pump Repair

Heat pump problems produce specific symptoms in heating or cooling mode. Recognizing these signs helps you get professional service before minor issues become major failures.

Your heat pump won’t heat or cool properly when capacity declines. The system runs constantly without achieving thermostat setpoint. Some rooms stay uncomfortable even though the unit operates continuously. Reduced performance in either mode indicates problems requiring professional attention.

Switching to emergency heat frequently suggests your heat pump struggles in heating mode. The system should handle heating needs down to design temperatures, only using backup heat during defrost cycles or extreme cold. If emergency heat strips run constantly during moderate winter weather, your heat pump has problems.

Ice buildup on the outdoor unit during heating mode indicates defrost cycle problems. Some frost accumulation is normal, but heavy ice coating the entire unit or ice that doesn’t clear within 15 minutes signals defrost issues. Without proper defrost, ice blocks airflow and prevents heating.

Strange noises from indoor or outdoor units point to mechanical problems. Grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds indicate component wear or damage. Hissing suggests refrigerant leaks. Unusual noises warrant professional inspection before they become failures.

Warning signs requiring repair:

  • Inadequate heating during winter operation
  • Weak cooling during summer months
  • System blowing cold air in heating mode
  • Outdoor unit constantly covered in ice
  • Short cycling on and off frequently
  • Rising energy bills without increased usage
  • Thermostat displaying error codes

Skokie’s climate stresses heat pumps year-round. Cold winter operation pushes heating capacity limits while hot, humid summers demand maximum cooling output. Problems often emerge during seasonal transitions when systems switch between modes.

Common Heat Pump Problems We Fix

Elite HVACs repairs all types of heat pump failures. Our experience with Skokie’s climate means we understand problems local systems face most frequently.

Reversing valve failures prevent mode switching. The reversing valve redirects refrigerant flow to change between heating and cooling. When it fails, your heat pump might work in one mode but not the other, or get stuck unable to switch. Reversing valve replacement restores proper operation in both modes.

Defrost control problems cause excessive ice buildup during heating. The defrost cycle should activate periodically to melt frost from outdoor coils. Failed defrost sensors, control boards, or timers prevent proper defrost, allowing ice to accumulate and block airflow. Ice-covered outdoor units can’t absorb heat for home heating.

Refrigerant leaks reduce capacity in both heating and cooling modes. Low refrigerant prevents adequate heat transfer. Your heat pump struggles to maintain temperature and may ice up during cooling operation. Finding and repairing leaks then recharging the system restores performance.

Compressor problems affect both modes since the compressor operates year-round. Failed capacitors prevent compressor startup. Worn compressors lose capacity gradually. Complete compressor failure means no heating or cooling until replacement.

Outdoor fan motor failures stop airflow over the outdoor coil. Without airflow, heat exchange can’t occur properly in either mode. Failed motors require replacement to restore function.

Control board and sensor failures cause erratic operation. Faulty temperature sensors provide incorrect readings. Failed control boards can’t properly manage system operation. Electronic component problems often cause strange symptoms that systematic diagnosis reveals.

Our Heat Pump Repair Process

Elite HVACs follows a comprehensive diagnostic approach identifying heat pump problems accurately. Proper diagnosis is especially important for heat pumps since symptoms in one mode can indicate problems with components affecting both modes.

Diagnosis begins with understanding your symptoms and recent system behavior. Did problems start suddenly or develop gradually? Do issues affect heating, cooling, or both? When did you last have maintenance? This information helps focus diagnostic work.

System testing examines operation in the affected mode. We measure refrigerant pressures and temperatures, check electrical components, test defrost operation during heating mode, and verify proper component function. Specialized test equipment reveals problems that visual inspection misses.

Component testing isolates specific failures. We test reversing valves, defrost controls, temperature sensors, and all electrical components. Systematic testing identifies root causes rather than just treating obvious symptoms.

Once we identify problems, we explain what’s wrong and what repair options exist. You’ll understand the issue, why it happened, and what’s needed to fix it. Upfront pricing lets you approve work before we begin repairs.

Our repair process includes:

  • Complete system diagnosis and testing
  • Mode-specific operation testing
  • Refrigerant pressure and temperature measurements
  • Electrical component testing
  • Defrost cycle operation verification
  • Root cause identification
  • Clear explanation of findings
  • Upfront repair pricing
  • Professional repair using quality parts
  • Post-repair testing in all modes

Testing after repairs confirms proper operation in heating and cooling modes. We verify the system heats adequately, cools effectively, and defrost cycles operate correctly. You won’t be left with partially functioning equipment discovered later.

Emergency Heat Pump Repair

Elite HVACs provides 24/7 emergency heat pump repair because failures during extreme weather create urgent situations. Heat pump problems during Skokie’s winter cold or summer heat demand immediate attention.

Winter heat pump failures are especially critical. When your heat pump can’t provide heating during below-freezing weather, emergency heat strips may not provide adequate backup. Frozen pipes, uncomfortable living conditions, and safety concerns for vulnerable family members all make rapid repair essential.

Summer cooling failures affect health and comfort. Heat pumps that won’t cool during hot, humid weather create dangerous indoor conditions for elderly residents, young children, and anyone with health conditions. We understand the urgency and respond quickly.

Our emergency service includes rapid dispatch with fully equipped technicians ready to diagnose and repair problems. We stock common heat pump parts enabling same-visit repairs for most issues without extended delays waiting for parts.

Emergency repair features:

  • 24/7 availability year-round
  • Rapid response during extreme weather
  • Fully stocked service vehicles
  • Experienced technicians handling urgent calls
  • Same upfront pricing as regular service
  • Priority dispatch for maintenance clients

We prioritize emergency calls based on severity and weather conditions. Heat pump failures during extreme cold or heat receive fastest response since these situations affect safety and health.

Why Choose Elite HVACs

Elite HVACs brings specialized heat pump expertise ensuring accurate diagnosis and effective repairs. Heat pumps are more complex than standard AC systems, and proper repair requires specific knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heating mode?

Common causes include reversing valve problems, low refrigerant, defrost cycle operation, or the system running in emergency heat mode. Professional diagnosis identifies the specific issue.

Repair costs vary by problem. Simple fixes like capacitors or sensors cost $150 to $400. Major repairs like compressor or reversing valve replacement range from $1,200 to $3,000 or more.

It depends on your system’s age and repair cost. If your heat pump is over 10 years old and repair exceeds 50% of replacement cost, new equipment often provides better value.

Ice during heating indicates defrost problems. Failed defrost controls, sensors, or timers prevent the system from melting accumulated frost. Low refrigerant can also cause icing issues.
